Many complex engineering, operations, and business systems can be modelled as discrete-event systems, including call-center; manufacturing companies’ supply chain, hospital emergency rooms, airport terminals, and air traffic control systems. The complexity of the systems and the uncertain nature of the environment often make simulation the only feasible analytic tool to model and study the design and operations of these systems.

Simulation is a powerful tool if understood and used properly. This simulation tutorial is designed to teach the basics of simulation. The tutorial is divided into 3 main sections: Introduction to simulation, Arena modelling, and Examples and case studies.

The introduction to simulation starts with a definition of simulation, goes through systems and modelling definitions, then touches base with the advantages and disadvantages of simulation, and ending with the reasons to use simulation in any study. Later the tutorial starts to explain the systems' components that are essential to specify and define in any simulation study. And finally it explains how a simulation study should be conducted.

The second section of this tutorial is Arena Modeling, which is mainly focusing on the programming (software) language part of the simulation study. The tutorials in this section are divided into two sub-sections: Basic arena modules and Advanced Arena Modules. Whereas the last section will cover examples and case studies solved using Arena software.
